Top 5 Email Marketing Mistakes
And how to avoid them.
1. You’re not sending consistently.
Plan to send an email at least once a month. Consistency > frequency.
If your seeing your email makes something think, “Wait, who is this again?”—you’ve waited too long.
2. You’re missing your mailing address.
Legally, every email needs a real mailing address.
It can be a PO Box, but it can’t just say “Seattle, WA.”
(Look up CAN-SPAM laws if you want to go down that rabbit hole.)
3. You’re only designing in Canva.
Emails need real text and not just pretty graphics.
Did you know? Image-only emails are more likely to end up in spam.
Use text for text. Use graphics or photos as needed.
4. You’re not asking for subscribers.
People won’t join if you never ask.
(And most are just waiting for the invite.)
Add a link to sign up to your instagram stories, at events, on receipts… wherever your people are!
Give them a reason to subscribe (not: join my newsletter!).
Think: Waitlists. Freebies. First access. Discount for joining.
Make it easy to sign up with a dedicated landing page.
Then share the link through a QR code, IG button, or story swipe.

5. You skipped domain verification.
Don’t skip this step!
Verifying your domain increases your deliverability and reduces the chance that your emails go straight to spam.
You’ll need access to your domain hosting platform (GoDaddy, Squarespace, etc.).

just getting started?
1. Choose a platform:
For e-commerce: Shopify + Klaviyo
For courses: Kajabi
For (almost) everyone else: Flodesk, or Campaign Monitor
2. Start gathering emails:
Ask for permission. Never add people manually without it.
(It’s not just nice, it’s the law.)
Make it easy with a short-and-sweet landing page.
Then share the link through a QR code, a story button, or anywhere you’re already showing up.

3. Verify your domain:
Get your emails out of the spam folder.
To do this, you’ll need to access your DNS records (where your domain is hosted).
Most platforms will walk you through it, but yes, it’s a little technical.
We admit, it isn’t fun, but it’s necessary. Need help? Reach out.
4. Design and send your first email.
Make it simple. Make it human.
Ask yourself, “Would I want to read this email?”
Then keep going! Send an email at least once a month.
